Bone Support
Periodontal Health*

If you want healthy bones, it is important to understand the role of minerals in periodontal health.  Bone disease can occur when your levels of calcium and phosphorus are imbalance and not within their proper levels.  If your phosphorus is too high, the body takes the calcium out of your bones in order to bind it with the phosphorus and remove it from your blood.  This can make your bones less dense and brittle.

Most people that take a calcium supplement take calcium carbonate.  The bad news is that this may block most of the absorption of phosphorus,  If that occurs the calciuim you are taking won't do you much good because bone mineral is comprised of both calcium and phosphorus.

For this reason I find that the formulations made by Standard Process® seem to work better for our patients.  They use calcium lactate and have the proper mineral balance to maximize absorption.

Calcium is actually the most abundant mineral in the body. (About 2 to 2.5 pounds in an average-sized person.)  It has several important functions. It is essential for muscle contraction, functioning of the cells, and for transmission of nerve impulses from our nerve endings to muscle fibers.  It is also a critical element in blood clotting, and as calcium phosphate it makes up the basic constituent of our teeth and bones.  Now, while calcium is important for bones because it is a major component of bones, it is also important to remember to take Vitamin D.  On average people get more calcium than they do Vitamin D (your body produces it when you are exposed to sunlight). This vitamin is important for your bones because it regulates calcium absorption and excretion, especially when your calcium intake is low.

Over the years, some patients have commented that they have not done well with calcium supplements, however, and have been cautious about taking any form of supplemental calcium, due to constipation.  While most of these patients have been successful with calcium lactate, it is good to know that there are also non-calcium supplements that can promote bone health.  These contain other important minerals that are also required by the body for bone formation.  You can learn more by clicking below:
