Gums Health
The connection between proper nutrition
and good health has been known
for centuries. Aside from regular home care and
professional cleanings your gums require the right
nourishment to stay in top shape.
Vitamin C
Perhaps the most basic element related
to the integrity of healthy gums is vitamin C. As early
as grade school, I remember being told the story of how limes
were issued to British sailors in order to prevent scurvy
(vitamin C deficiency). Hence, the term
"limeys". Humans, it seems, are among the few
mammals that do not naturally produce their own vitamin
C. We rely entirely upon our diet for this vitamin.
Even a goat -- roughly the same weight as a person -- can
convert glucose into approximately 13,000 mg of vitamin C per
day. This occurs when it is healthy. When it is
stressed, the goat may produce as much as eight times that
amount. Likewise, when people encounter bacterial
infections or stress, more vitamin C is required. It is
essential to healing, repair of tissues and cell growth.
Specifically, it is a principal ingredient in the formation of
collagen. This is a basic protein that is found in all
connective tissue -- including that found in the gums and
periodontal ligaments. Periodontal ligaments are what connect
the gums tightly against your teeth, as well as hold the teeth
in the jawbone.
Simply put, a lack of vitamin C can cause
loose teeth and swollen gums. A fourteen week study
conducted at the University of California, San Francisco,
demonstrated that when vitamin C was reduced gums bled
more. When intake was increased, this bleeding
subsided. In yet another study, people getting less than
the minimum recommended amount of vitamin C had more
periodontal disease than those who received the minimum.
They also had three times the chance of gingivitis than those
people who took three times the recommended dose.

Co-Enzyme Q10
This supplement is also likely to be beneficial for nearly
all adults. Some people believe that one of the key
elements in aging has to do with free radical production.
Free radicals are basically oxygen atoms that are lacking
electrons. This makes them highly reactive, but
especially in a manner that may potentially damage your tissues
and your DNA.
If you could do something to slow down free radical
production it is possible you could slow down aging.* One
nutrient that may just play a role in that process is CoEnzyme
Q10. If you are under twenty-five years of age, this
may not be a problem. CoQ10 exists in every cell of our
body. Some time after age 25, however, our body's ability
to produce it diminishes.
Some of the benefits* of CoEnzyme Q10 have been reported to
be:
- Supporting healthy gums
- Boosting the body's immune system
- Helping to maintain normal blood sugar levels
- Promoting normalization of weight
- Supporting muscle recovery from intensive exercise
- Promoting heart health
In my opinion, this is one supplement that should be part of
your regimen if you are over 25, take statin drugs (which
depletes your stores of Q10), or are experiencing gum
problems. While CoEnzymeQ10 is easily found in most
health food stores, the formulation I personally take is
combined with flaxseed oil, as well as a form of super
blue-green algae. You can find it by clicking below:
